Here at Flavourtown bakery we make all of our fondant decorations in house and to let you into a little secret? It's not as hard as you think. In this tutorial, we show you how to make fondant decorations, make flamingo wings using the cool brush stroke chocolate technique and of course finish the flamingo cupcakes with sprinkles.
Flamingos are one of the biggest trends in cake and cupcakes right now and here's exactly how you make them...
Step 1: Start with pink fondant and roll into a long sausage shape. Using a fondant ball tool insert into one end of the pink fondant to make a hole. Add a separate piece of white fondant into the hole and shape downwards into a beak.
Step 2: Add a black pearl bead each side of the head for the eyes. Using these small glossy beads gives a much more realistic effect for an eye than black fondant. Repeat this process for as many cupcakes as needed.
Step 3: Melt in a bowl some good quality white chocolate. Microwave the chocolate in 20 seconds burst to make sure it does not burn.
Step 4: Mix in gel colouring (this must not be water based as it will cause the chocolate to seize) and onto parchment paper make small pound coin size (2cm) blobs. Take a new, clean brush and with a single stroke, brush through the coloured chocolate. You will need to make the brush strokes in two directions to make wings for the left and the right hand size of the cupcakes.
Step 5: Take your cupcake bases and pink frosting and swirl using a large round nozzle. Keep your sprinkles handy, as they need to be applied as soon as you have frosted so that they stick over the whole cupcake.
Step 6: Let the wings dry completely (You can put them in the fridge for 5 mins to set) and apply to the cupcakes. Insert the flamingo head into the frosting and add some edible glitter for an extra bit of sparkle!
Step 7: Eat and enjoy!
